A Comprehensive Guide to Learning your iPhone Battery

Is your iPhone battery CONSTANTLY annoying you with the pop-up low battery warning? Do you think your iPhone may have some battery issues? Here’s a guide to help you learn how to identify the symptoms all of the way to implementing practical resolutions.

Common Signs of Battery Trouble:

Recognizing the red flags is the first step in figuring out if and when something is wrong with your battery. Keep an eye out for these indicators:

  • Rapid battery drainage, even with minimal usage
  • Unexpected shutdowns, especially when the battery percentage is not particularly low
  • Delayed charging or difficulty reaching a full charge

There is a slight caveat to these though. If your phone is shutting off after being exposed to water or some other damage, it may be motherboard damage or something else. These battery red flags are under the presumption that your iPhone has sustained no major damage.

Understanding iPhone-Specific Battery Challenges:

iPhones, they are great for productivity and the UI is quite easy to use, however they certainly aren’t immune to battery problems. Here are some issues specific to Apple devices:

  • Battery Health Degradation: Over time, iPhones often experience a decline in battery health, affecting overall performance.
  • Background App Refresh: Apps running in the background can contribute to excessive battery consumption (although it should be noted that services like location tracking are more impactful than the apps themselves).
  • iOS Updates Impact: New iOS updates might impact older iPhone models, impacting battery life.

What do I do When I Think I Have a Battery Issue?

There are a handful of ways to test and resolve your battery problems, as sometimes you might not need to replace the battery at all. Let’s take a look:

  1. Check Battery Health: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to assess the overall health of your battery. Generally speaking, at the repair shop we recommend replacing your battery at 86% health or below.
  2. App Battery Usage: Check which apps are consuming the most battery under Settings > Battery. If there is an obvious culprit consider changing some settings or even uninstalling.
  3. Update iOS: Ensure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version to benefit from performance and battery improvements.

Strategies for Resolving Your iPhone Battery Issues:

Now that we’ve identified what the actual issue with the battery is, here are some solutions you can take:

  1. Optimize Settings: Adjust screen brightness, enable Low Power Mode, and manage background app refresh in Settings to conserve battery.
  2. App Updates: Keep your apps up-to-date to benefit from performance optimizations.
  3. Battery-Draining Apps: Identify and manage apps that consume excessive power. Consider uninstalling or limiting their usage.
  4. Reset Settings: If issues persist, try resetting all settings under Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  5. Battery Replacement: For older iPhones experiencing significant battery degradation, consider replacing the battery.

When to Seek Professional Help:

If DIY solutions fall short, it might be time to seek professional assistance:

  • Apple Support: Reach out to Apple Support for guidance on potential hardware issues or software-related solutions.
  • Battery Replacement Service: Apple offers battery replacement services for devices out of warranty. You can also take your phone into an Apple certified repair shop like mine and we can put OEM Apple batteries in your phone as well. Aftermarket batteries also work well but they have some downsides to the OEM ones.

To Summarize:

Addressing iPhone battery issues involves a combination of monitoring, optimization, and, in some cases, seeking professional help. Keep an eye on your battery health, adopt smart usage habits, and empower your iPhone for a longer-lasting, reliable performance.
